A few weeks ago I was having dinner at the Café in Somerset with my friend Howard Heemstra, Professor Emeritus of Architecture at Iowa State University, and he was recalling life as a young architecture student in Iowa. One of the things he remembered was a short ditty that he and his friends from the Mies gang came up with to counter the Frank LLoyd Wright gang at school. It goes like this:

I-beams, wide flange, structural Ts, we’re the boys that worship Mies, we build buildings outside in, hiding structure is a sin.
